The Boys and Girls of Peace Dale—
the hope of the future
This little sketch was prepared very hurriedlyin order to give scope to the volunteerefforts of certain of the younger members ofthe community who had undertaken to providethe entertainment for the Christmas celebration of1910 of the Peace Dale Congregational SundaySchool.
After looking patiently and long for somethingwhich they could act for the entertainment oftheir fellows, they despaired of finding anythingthey would like.
In their dilemma they appealed to me, sayingthat their principal desire was to introduce thesinging of Christmas carols in some way not toocommonplace.
The characters were taken by inexperiencedactors who, nevertheless, presented the masque ina very genuine and convincing manner.
The whole time of action was about thirty-fiveminutes, including the singing of the Christmascarols. I was urged to amplify the action, inorder to somewhat prolong the part played byRobin Hood and his men, but, after some effortin this direction, I gave it up, as the principalmerit of the masque seemed to me to be itsbrevity.
Several friends have urged its preservationin print in the hope that it may prove suggestiveor useful to others in like predicament.
