DANAË PLAYS THE EAVESDROPPER.

The scene was a picture in itself. Sea and sky vied with one anotherin the depth of their unruffled blue, and in the glorious sunshine andclear air the cliffs were vividly, even startlingly, white. All roundthe island they presented an inhospitable front to the voyager save atone point, where advantage had been taken of a steep ravine runningdown to the sea to find room for a number of white-walled, red-roofedhouses, which seemed to cling precariously to successive steps in therock, from the primitive harbour at its foot to the rude fortress atthe summit. On the land side, grey olive-trees came so close to thefortress walls that either of the girls lounging in a shady spot onthe ramparts and lazily nibbling sunflower seeds could have touchedthe uppe
