INTRODUCTORY NOTE.

The present is the fifth volume of the Journal of the American-IrishHistorical Society. I desire to acknowledge the many courtesiesreceived during its preparation, and to express my deep appreciationof the same. This volume sets forth the work done by theorganization during the year, presents several historical papers ofvalue and contains other matter of interest. All the volumes of theJournal thus far issued have received a cordial welcome and havebeen the recipients of the most gratifying praise. It is hoped thatthe present work will be equally well received. The Society continuesto enjoy a prosperous existence, has no indebtedness, and isconstantly adding new members to its roll.
