In offering to the public in book form thefollowing tales, from the pages of THE SMARTSET, the opportunity is presented to the authorof answering the questions that have frequentlybeen asked of him and the publishers, since thesestories first appeared in print, concerning theirorigin. He is not, and has not been, the deus exmachina.
One Perkins, a Yankee who lived for fifty yearsin India, and became an adept in mysteriesrejected by the Occidental mind, is responsible forthe curious psychical transpositions described inthe following pages. I am not at liberty to saymuch about Perkins. He has control of a powerthat is so peculiar, and I may say erratic, that Idare not offend him.
