TO ALL LITTLE CHILDREN
WHO THINK GRAMMAR HARD AND DRY,
This Book is Dedicated,
BY ONE WHO LOVES TO SEE
SUNSHINE IN SCHOOLROOM-SHIRE.

PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION.

The favourable reception that the former Editions ofthis little book have met with, calls for a word ofacknowledgment. It seems that not only the littlefolks for whom it was intended, but children of alarger growth have read it with interest; and students, who spend days and nights “with wearyeyesight poring over miserable books,” have condescendedto turn over these pages, and laughinglyadmit that the imagination may sow even thedustiest of book-shelves with flowers.

Teachers of the younger classes in schools havefound this little volume extremely useful; and it isvsuggested, that though children will often read itwith pleasure by themselves, they will derive muchmore profit from it when it is made the text-bookfor a lesson. The simple exercises appended to eachchapter will then be found both useful and entertaining.
