In consenting to write the history of the organization,and the marches, skirmishes, battles and deeds of ourbrave old regiment, at this late date, is, I know, acceptingan undertaking from which anyone might well shrink;and yet to preserve on record the dear old story, thetask has been cheerfully attempted.
It is not expected that this book will be of interest tothe general reader; to those only who participated in, orfollowed with loving eyes, its fortunes, will the dry details,which must necessarily often enter into its composition,be interesting, and without apology to the officers andmen, of the 123d Ohio Volunteer Infantry, this book isoffered as a true record of their soldier life.
To the noble dead of our old battle-worn regiment, whethersleeping in unknown graves, on southern battlefields,or by the dark prison pens, where only the sighing pinesmay chaunt their requiem, or it may be in the quietchurchyards of our own bright northland, to their widowsand orphans who mourn in sorrow
