PREFACE.

It is a proverbial truth that thunderstormsclear the air. And it would seem asthough that eventful and terrible periodof English history, known as the Wars of theRoses, had cleared the political air for the comingReformation. How little those who took part init realised the time to follow! To the men of thatday it was either a wrestle for personal fame, or apassionate enthusiasm for the establishment of Right. To the women with whom it was not the latter,it must have been a meaningless agony—a passionwith no visible end, and with no conceivable moralpurpose. Alas for him who loses his faith in theprovidence of God, for the key of the world hasdropped out of his hand. And happy are they whocan calmly walk on in the dark by the side of theFather, it may be feeling the atmosphere painfullyoppressive, yet willing to wait His time, andknowing that when they come forth into the light of theGolden City, they will be satisfied with it.
