The kindly welcome accorded by the press tomy volume Studies of Childhood has suggestedto me that there was much in it which might bemade attractive to a wider class of readers thanthat addressed in a psychological work. I have, accordingly, prepared the following selections, cutting out abstruse discussions, dropping as faras possible technical language, and adapting thestyle to the requirements of the general reader. In order to shorten the work the last twochapters—"Extracts from a Father's Diary"and "George Sand's Childhood"—have beenomitted. The order of treatment has beenaltered somewhat, and a number of stories hasbeen added. I hope that the result maysucceed in recommending what has longbeen to myself one of the most delightful ofsubjects to many who would not be disposed toread a larger and more difficult work, and todraw on a few of these, at least, to a closer andmore serious inspection of it.
