TRANSLATOR'S NOTE

Of the contemporary Polish authors representedin this volume only Henryk Sienkiewicz is wellknown in England. Although the works of StefanŻeromski, Adam Szymański, and Wacław Sieroszewskiare widely read in Poland, none have asyet appeared in English, so far as the presenttranslator is aware. 'Srul—from Lubartów' isgenerally considered one of the most strikingof Adam Szymański's Siberian 'Sketches.' Theauthor writes from personal experience, havinghimself been banished to Siberia for a numberof years. The same can be said of WacławSieroszewski; during the fifteen years spent inSiberia as a political exile, he made a study ofsome of the native tribes, especially the Yakutand Tungus, and has written a great deal on thissubject. Stefan Żeromski is also one of the mostdistinguished modern Polish novelists; several ofhis books have been translated into French andGerman.

The translator is under a deep obligation tothe authors, MM. Sienkiewicz, Szymański, andŻeromski, for kindly allowing her to publish thesetales in English, and to Mr. J. H. Retinger,Secretary of the Polish Bureau in London, forauthorising the same on behalf of M. Sieroszewski.
