SIR,
I Most humbly offerto You myThoughts concerningthe Preventionof the Plague, which I have put togetherIVby your Command. As soonas you was pleased to signifyto me, in his Majestie'sAbsence; that their Excellenciesthe Lords Justicesthought it necessary for thePublick Safety, upon theAccount of the Sicknessnow in France, that properDirections should be drawnup to defend our selvesfrom such a Calamity; Imost readily undertook theTask, though upon shortWarning, and with littleLeisure: I have therefore ratherput down the principalHeads of Caution, than aSet of Directions in Form.
VThe first, which relateto the performing Quarentines,&c. You, who areperfectly versed in the Historyof Europe, will see areagreable to what ispractised in other Countries, with some new Regulations. The next, concerning thesuppressing Infection here, are very different from theMethods taken in formerTimes among Us, and fromwhat they commonly Do Abroad:But, I persuademy self, will be found agreableto Reason.
VII most heartily wish, thatthe wise Measures, the Governmenthas already taken, and will continue totake, with Regard to theformer of these, may makethe Rules about the latterunnecessary: However it isfit, we should be always providedwith proper Meansof Defence against so terriblean Enemy.
May this short Essay bereceived as one Instance, amongmany others, of theCare, you always shew forYour Country; and as aVIITestimony of the great Esteemand Respect, withwhich I have the Honourto be,
