Transcriber’s Note: This text makes use of an uncommon system fortranscription of Arabic. Italics, sometimes on a single letter (highlighted in red here, but not in the text!),are semantically meaningful; and you’ll need a font that can displaymacrons (āēīōū) and the characters for the transliterations ofArabic letters ain (ʿ) and hamza (ʾ).

The first draft of this work was presented to theUniversity of London in December 1921, under the titleof “The Arab Conquest of Transoxania”, as a thesis forthe degree of Master of Arts, and was approved by theSenate in January 1922, for publication as such. Duringthe year my attention was taken up in other directionsand, except for the publication of two studies on thesubject in the Bulletin of the School of Oriental Studies, nothing further was done until by the generosity of theTrustees of the Forlong Bequest Fund an opportunityof publication was offered. In its present form the workhas been largely rewritten and revised. It makes noclaim to present a complete historical account of theArabs in Central Asia, but is intended solely as a criticalstudy of the authorities in greater detail than has hithertobeen made.
