One of them was a tall young womanof distinguished presence and somewhatimperious carriage, as you could gather at afirst glance; but the next second, if shehappened to turn her face towards you, you wouldhave perceived that her expression meantnothing but a bland gentleness and aprevailing and excellent good-humour.
