PREFACE.

The present work needs but little introduction tothe English public. The author, M. F. Marion, whoholds a high official scientific position in Paris, is wellknown, especially in Europe, as a popular writer onthe “Wonders of Optics,” and kindred subjects. As arule, the original text has been strictly adhered to bythe Translator, but in a few instances certain anecdotesof a local character have been altered so as to be moregenerally applicable, or condensed to make room forthe chapter on the Spectroscope, which is entirelyoriginal.
