The scorching heat of a midsummerday beat mercilessly upon the earth. Travelers onthe dusty roads, toilers in the fields, and othersexposed to the rays of the sun, thought yearninglyof cooling winds and running streams. They would havelooked with envy upon the scene being enacted in oneof the small streams of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.There a little red-haired girl, barefooted, her shortgingham skirt tucked up unevenly here and there, waswading in the cool, shallow waters of a creek thatwas tree-bordered and willow-arched. Her clear, ripplinglaughter of sheer joy broke through the Sabbaticalcalm of that quiet spot and echoed up and down themeadow as she splashed
